COFLT Language Mentor Program
Oregon's language teaching association, COFLT (Confederation
in Oregon for Language Teaching), offers an exceptional
professional development opportunity for new language teachers,
to help them learn and apply effective ways of teaching
elementary and secondary students how to use a second language.
The COFLT Mentorship Program provides: a) a year-long commitment
of one-on-one support and guidance from an experienced language
teacher who is familiar with Oregon's second language standards
and with ways of helping students achieve those standards;
b) free membership in COFLT for the current school year,
providing a subscription to the COFLT publication, Spectrum
and a continuing flow, via email and other channels, of
information on second language developments and opportunities;
c) a reduced registration fee for the COFLT Fall Conference;
d) Continuing Professional Development units as determined
by the Learning Log recorded by the teacher and mentor during
the school year. e) an introduction to the committed and
mutually supportive community of language teachers in Oregon,
who pride themselves on making language learning a performance
skill, that conveys long-term benefits to the student, the
community, and the nation.
The district employing the participating teacher will be
obliged to allow that teacher time to attend the COFLT Annual
Fall Conference. Participants themselves will be responsible
for the reduced registration fee plus overnight and travel
costs, and for compliance with terms of the program, including
attendance at a special Conference Briefing Session. The
number of participants in this program is necessarily limited,
so a complete and prompt application is essential.
In order to become a mentor, an application is necessary.
Please download the application (PDF) here.
